Hydroelectric Energy
Source : Moving Water

Hydroelectric energy is transferred into usable energy by the moving water that flows through tunnels in a dam. As the water flows through the tunnels into the turbines, it drives the generators which produce electricity. This creates no pollution or waste and is a efficient way to produce. The electricity transfers to houses and business factories. It is used everyday by millions of people.

Hydroelectricity is used today by the Hoover Dam in Chicago. Also by homes for their electricity and its also used by businesses to run their factories. Every single dam also produces and uses hydroelectricity.

Advantages:
  • no waste or pollution
  • very reliable
  • can be generated constantly all day
  • water can be stored in dams or other lakes, rivers, etc.

Disadvantages:

  • finding a suitable site is difficult
  • water quality and quantity can be affected
  • large dams can cause flooding
  • dams are very expensive to build
  • dams can harm a lot of wildlife

Hydroelectricity is a renewable type of energy.
